International Roadcheck is an annual event that takes place over 72 hours across North America. During these three days, inspectors certified by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conduct roadside inspections to enforce vehicle, motor carrier, and driver safety.

Organizations that participate in International Roadcheck are the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation in Mexico.

2020 International Roadcheck

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, the 33rd Annual International Roadcheck was postponed from May to September 2020. In total, 50,151 inspections were performed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Vehicle types that were inspected were cargo tanks and combinations carrying hazardous materials (hazmat), large trucks and combinations, non-hazmat cargo tanks and combinations, and passenger vehicles.

Out of all of the vehicles inspected, 12,254 were found to have out-of-service (OOS) violations. An OOS violation means that the violation must be corrected before the vehicle is permitted to return to the road. The percentage of vehicle OOS violations was 20.9% of the total number of vehicles inspected.

Here are the top five vehicle OOS violations identified in North America:

- Brake System (25.8% of all OOS violations)
- Tires (19.0%)
- Lights (13.5%)
- Cargo Securement (12.9%)
- Brake Adjustment (12.8%)

Compared to 2019, the overall vehicle OOS rate is up by 3%.

How to Avoid an OOS Violation

If your organization uses transport vehicles of any kind, you would want to avoid an out-of-service violation at all costs. To achieve this, you need to perform regular audits and inspections on your vehicles to assess whether they're all in good working order.

A vehicle inspection is complex and requires close attention to details. The systems mentioned in the most common vehicle violations of 2020 are only a handful of vehicle parts an inspector needs to evaluate.

Audit and inspection software is an excellent way to make sure you get everything right.

The Checker Pro is a software solution that can be used to audit and inspect anything from construction sites to warehouses to machinery and equipment and, yes, to vehicles and trailers. It is compatible with any tablet, desktop, laptop, or smartphone.

With The Checker Pro, you will easily keep track of your vehicles' working conditions, the schedule of your audits or inspections, and what needs to be improved. You can create your own customized lists to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Takeaway

The International Roadcheck from 2020 revealed that almost 21% of transport vehicles across North America are operating with dangerous, out-of-service violations. An OOS violation puts a vehicle out of business until the violation is corrected, which can be a significant financial hit to an organization.

To ensure that your business doesn't suffer from a vehicle OOS violation, you need to perform regular inspections and assessments. Audit and inspection software such as The Checker will be of great help in this process.
